Manchester to be the new Whitehall?
New plans for the building tentatively being referred to as the ‘Whitehall of the north’ are set to be released today. The plans are for a new office complex that will be located in Manchester that is projected to bring about five thousand civil servants to the city.
The campus will contain many high tech shared offices that will surround a public park that is to be built near the Piccadilly Station.
Throughout the construction of the project the area will undergo many transformations that include extending the inner ring road and reopening the Mayfield railway station.
The civil servants will be coming from across the Greater Manchester area and insiders on the plan believe that more jobs will be created. Proposals for the office space area will be heard on Monday before the consultations become public in 2010.
Phil Woolas the Regional Minister stated that the new plan creates an exciting vision for the city of Manchester and comes at the ideal time when the Government is looking to relocate civil servants outside of the South East and London.
Woolas continued to say there will be many benefits to the area that include building the reputation of Manchester for other civil servant opportunities.
The plans to redo the area and open Mayfield Station once again were first addressed this past May after the Government decided that a study regarding the feasibility of the area as a campus for civil service was worth funding. The findings from this report are due to be released in February.
