A Few Common Myths Surrounding B.tox
Sydney Botulinum medicine (B.tox for short) has become a necessity in Sydney society and has become a beauty routine necessity for many in the city. All the same I am often astounded when I listen to the ludicrous stories in connection with this simple procedure.
I have listed below some of the myths which I come across day in day out in Star Cosmetic Medicine, where I work as a physician.
Error # 1: I won’t be able to use my facial muscles normally!
The human face has approximately 60 muscles. The excessive use of these muscles may result in line formation. If surplus B.tox has been injected the muscles of the face can become over relaxed. The dose injected by most physicians make you appear refreshed, but still you will maintain your normal expression.
So by injecting a carefully measured dosage of the preparation in precisely the right muscles you can have a reduction in the fine lines and wrinkles without reducing facial expression.
Error # 2: Botulinum is a toxic substance!
This to a small extent is correct. Its medical name is Botulinum Toxin Type A. An overdose may end up in loss of muscle tone or may even cause serious illness.
However to put things into perspective: a famous chemist’s expression is that ‘everything is a poison - it all depends on the dose’. Every drug in a large enough amount may make you ill. Water can kill you if enough is taken.
Error # 3: B.tox hurts!
Your hairs are thicker than the needles we use at Star Cosmetic Medicine. Quite a few individuals say that the shots are not as sore as a bug bite. It certainly is not as painful as a procedure like a vaccination.
Error # 4: B.tox will deaden the feeling in my face!
Not true. B.tox acts on the junction between the nerve and the facial muscle, not the nerves of sensation. Only the ability to relax muscles is affected by B.tox.

Error # 5. You cannot stop having B.tox or else the lines become even worse!
This is also incorrect.
You can expect B.tox to last for upwards of three months. Any further injections after the first one should last a few weeks more. Eventually as muscle strength returns to normal, the wrinkles will reappear little by little. However they will certainly not be any more pronounced than when you began.
Even should you do not have B.tox again - those lines will in all probability be a little less pronounced than if you had not undergone the procedure. This, of course is typically so due to the fact your facial muscles and skin have had a rest whilst the B.tox was effective.
