Hairspray is the story of a joyful youngster named Tracy Turnblad, a would-be dancer who hopes to earn a place on a local television show called the Corny Collins Show. The show is in reality based on a Baltimore-based programme referred to as the Buddy Dean Show in Baltimore, Maryland.
Tracy is nameless in the dancing industry when she tries out, however she is chosen for a spot and against incredibly long odds becomes a dancing star almost overnight. Tracy is thrilled by this new reputation, & she comes to the decision to utilise her fame to bring about positive improvements to the television show. The key motive for these positive developments is related to race. Tracy seeks to racially fuse the TV show, and as anyone might guess, Tracy is met with lots of disagreement.
Hairspray moved to London’s West End in two-thousand and seven, opening for press at the Shaftesbury Theatre on October eleventh, before being opened to the public at its main opening on October thirtieth, two-thousand and seven. The play has had some well known actors — Michael Ball plays Edna Turnblad, Tracy’s very own mother, offering marvellous interpretation in this taxing female part, whilst Mel Smith played joke shop owner Wilbur Turnblad, Tracy’s father. The original cast in the West End also features newcomer to the stage, Leanne Jones, in the leading character of Tracy.
Hairspray has received countless upbeat reviews from the media & musical theatre fans alike. Jacqueline commented: “I have been to see the show four times up until now & I will be certainly going back again next week & a few more times after that as well. I love the show and wish they could stay on longer. Ben Ellis is terrific as link and Leanne Jones as Tracey & Michael Ball, well they are all fabulous. The play hairspray is unquestionably my favourite, it is cheerful & if you are feeling a bit dejected then it is guaranteed to make you feel a great deal better. I give it a 10 out of 10 - I love it congratulations to everyone involved with it. Enjoy a cheap night out with discount theatre tickets.
